Honey Badgers 2 consisted of Annabel Bridges (‘23) and Mary Daniels (‘24), and Sydney Mandell (‘26) and Kerstin Hyer (‘25). With gusty winds coming from the south both days, the Wisconsin Women tackled the shifty conditions. Honey Badgers 1 ended the regatta in first place, and Honey Badgers 2 ended in 6th place overall. Thank you to all teams that came and special shoutout to Sophie and Finn for running an awesome regatta!

Streufurt @ Minnesota (October 22nd & 23rd, 2022)

Gavin Dempsey ‘26, Carmen Lineer ‘26, Cal Lutton ‘26, Maeve Katics ‘26, and Maddy Netzer ‘26 all sailed fast in their respective divisions throughout the weekend, winning the regatta. David Lee Arnoff @ Hobart & William Smith Colleges (October 15th & 16th)

Wisconsin sailors Reed Weston '23, Abe Weston '25, Maeve Katics '26, Lauren Bemis '26, and Matt Keberlein '25, competed at the David Lee Arnoff Trophy regatta at Hobart and Willam Smith Colleges this weekend. The team finished 5th place overall, with A divison finishing in 7th, and B division finishing in 13th. Saturday, the first day of the regatta, was plagued with high gusty winds of up to 30 knots, and large rolling waves barreling down the lake. Resultantly, the regatta officials were forced to postpone all racing until Sunday. All day Sunday, conditions were amazing for sailing. A steady 12 knot breese out of the south made for a great, fair day of racing. Keys to success were getting a good, clean, start off the line, keeping a clean lane up the course, and surfing the remaining waves downwind. The breese and course was largely left favored all day long, so getting left was also a major key to succes at this regatta. Overall, the badgers are happy with their performance at the David Lee Arnoff Trophy Regatta and can't wait to hopefully return next year!

Women's Atlantic Coast Championship OR Tournament @ KP OR NYM (October 15th & 16th, 2022)

The first day was filled with ten races and strong current along the East River. The second day only had one race as the wind died and racing was cancelled. The team finished 12th overall which is one of the best season finishes ever for the women's team out East! There were great results from the gals in B fleet who got an 8th place finsish overall and A fleet finishing 16th respectively. We are thankful for our amazing hosts in New Jersey, especially Spinnaker, and were excited about being able to visit Sophie's hometown!

Becky Blank @ Northwestern (October 15th & 16th, 2022)

Wisconsin A fleet with Gavin Dempsey (‘26) and Kerstin Hyer (‘25) along with Wisconsin B fleet with Annabel Bridges (‘23) and Lauren Salmi (‘26) competed this weekend at the Becky Blank regatta at Northwestern. Saturday started with heavy and shifty breeze that picked up throughout the day. As the wind increased, Northwestern required sailors to put mast floats at the top of their sails to prevent from turtling. Wisconsin A fleet was protested by Purdue, but the contention was dismissed. The Wisco team ended the day in first. On the second day, the wind was lighter to start but continued to pickup and be shifty throughout the day. Wisconsin A and B fleet ended the regatta in 2nd, but secured the first for overall! Day one started with postponment due to high wind speeds of 20 knots consistent gusting into the 30's. At about 12pm the wind calmed down enough to begin racing. Day 1 the Wisconsin team put on a flawless preformance, both A and B division got first in all of the races. Day 2 brought some more challenging conditions, it was about 7-9 knots and very shifty. Regardless of the conditions the team preformed very well. At the end of the day, Wisconsin was leading both fleets and had won the regatta overall. B Division had an outstanding preformance day 2 as well, they won all 4 races on sunday making their score all 1's. The team gathered their awards and then headed back to Madison. Safety Officer Buttons Padin helped the team get dialed in for the coming weekend's races. On Saturday, competitors were treated to perfect racing conditions: 6-12 knots out of the Southeast. The team strung together a dominant performance, putting up straight bullets to give the Badgers a commanding lead at the end of the first day. The second day saw more breeze, testing the crew's cohesion and maneuvers, specifically on the downwinds. The team was unfazed, continuing the winning streak for the rest of the day to put up a picket fence for the regatta. The flawless performance was enough for the team to win the J/109 class as well as the Paul Hoffman Trophy, which is given to the overall victor of all classes. The team also won on style, with the entire team sporting handsome short-sleeve floral shirts on the final day of racing. Special thanks to Julie O'Dowd, Buttons Padin, and all those responsible for housing the team.

Reed Weston (‘23), Ally Hansen (‘23), Abe Weston (‘25), Cristina Dombrowski (‘23), and Ethan Jones (‘24) went down to sail at St. Mary’s for the Atlantic Coast Championships. Saturday started with light to medium breeze from the N/NW. The wind coming around the river bend caused constantly shifting angles and puffs, sometimes turning offsets into their own upwind beats. Sunday morning greeted the team with no wind, though it began to fill from the W/NW after a brief postponement. The breeze remained fairly light for the rest of the day, though decent puffs would sometimes appear for single legs of the races. Thank you to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland for hosting this regatta!

Cary Price @ Michigan (October 1st & 2nd, 2022)

Sam Spencer ‘24, Ellie Murphy ‘24, Gavin Dempsey ‘26, and Daniel Sandoval ‘26 travelled to Baseline Lake at the University of Michigan for the Cary Price regatta. The team battled shifty conditions and varied wind speeds both days. They ended in second overall after a hard fought battle with USF. Women's ACCs Round 1A @ Boston College (October 1st & 2nd, 2022)

The honey badgers took on Boston's Charles River this weekend competing in the first round of the women's Atlantic Coast Championship. Marissa Tegeder ('25) drove for the A division with Sophie Lusty ('24) as her crew. Meanwhile in the B division, Mary Castellini ('25) steered for Emma Komis ('26) and Mabel Sliney ('25). The first day brought light and shifty conditions, while day two Hurricane Ian brought a consistent NE with gusts into the high twenties. The A team finished in 16th, while the B team finished in 15th. Thank you to Boston College for hosting a successful regatta and Hailey Feinzig for hosting the women's team!

Danmark Trophy @ USCGA (October 1st & 2nd, 2022)

Charlie Herrick ('26), Maeve Katics ('26), Finn Tait ('25), Dylan Gorman ('25), and Maddy Netzer ('26) competed in the Danmark Trophy at the US Coast guard academy. Going into the weekend, foul weather was anticipated due to hurricane Ian moving up the east coast. Weather held for the weekend, so the team was able to race both days. On Saturday, the wind was steady around 14, with gusts to 18. Charlie and Maddy were sailing FJs in A, and they were able to stick with the competitive fleet, along with Finn and Dylan sailing Z420s in B. The A boat was able to get an impressive 12th in one of the races, beating many highly ranked teams. On Sunday, Hurricane Ian brought in a gale warning, and it was quite windy + shifty. Wind was 20-25, with gusts 30+. The fleet switched from being all on the water at the same time to rotating A and B, so all fleets could use 420s. A races got off to a good start, and the boat was sailing well, but due to swamping, exploding a jib window, and capsizing, the progress was not reflected in the scoring. The B boat sailed to the best of their abilities, but the wind was on the heavy side for the B boat pairing. This being said, the B boat stayed upright through the massive breeze, which not every team managed to do. Overall, the weekend was a success, with the badgers staying in the mix with a highly competitive fleet. Lots of learning happened, especially in terms of tactics. Thanks to Michelle Katics for housing the team on the drive out.

The breeze was out of the Southwest both days with variable conditions, but mostly breeze on. Four races were completed the first day with the open team in first, and the Honey Badgers not far behind in third. The second day began with no kites allowed on the first race, followed by three windy races with kites. The open team held their lead with more first and second place finishes, and the Honey Badgers fought until the end for fifth. Thank you to all the boat owners for access to their boats for a competitive weekend, and Columbia Yacht Club for hosting a great event.

Sugar Bowl @ Tulane (September 24th & 25th, 2022)

Wisco sailors Charlie Herrick '26, Sydney Mandell '26, Ryan Tatelbaum '25, Maeve Katics '26, and Ethan Jones ‘24 competed this weekend in the Sugar Bowl at Tulane in New Orleans, LA. The team drove to St.Louis on thursday, and after a stop in Memphis for lunch, arrived in New Orleans Friday night. Day one brought 2-6 knot Northeast breeze, and the fleet sailed Z420s. 4 races were sailed before a short lunch break, and after an on-the-water postponement the fleet was sent in for the day. Jonesy didn’t sail on Saturday, but had fun walking around the club, seeing the sights, and staying strapped with good snacks for the teammates who were competing. both divisions had an exciting day of racing. the sailors were tired after a long day of sailing, after taking a break the group got classic Creole New Orleans food on Bourbon street, then headed back to get rested for the day ahead. Day two was once again light wind, and the fleet sailed in FJs. Much like yesterday racing began at 10am in 2-5 knots coming from the North with flat water. Jonesy was able to crew for the first set of the day with Ryan. As the day heated up the breeze gradually shifted to the Northeast and began to die. After 8 total races the day was cut short and everyone was sent in again after another on-the-water postponement. The team ended up mid fleet at this competitive regatta, meeting our goal of beating the teams from Texas. The team was able to get a head start on the long drive back to Madison.

Single Handed Quals @ Wisconsin (September 17th & 18th, 2022)

Wisco sailors Claire Considine sailing an ILCA 6 ('23), Ryan Tatellbaum sailing an ILCA 7 ('25), and Marissa Tegeder sailing an ILCA 6 ('25) rallied their lasers to sail a fun and competitive regatta on the waters of Lake Mendota. Saturday morning brought great wind of around 6-10 knots and 30 degree obsoletions with the breeze out of the south, so sailors were able to get four great races off before heading in for a quick lunch. After lunch the wind picked up to a gusty 10-15 allowing the race committee to get off four more great races. The bigger breeze sent Marissa and Ryan for a couple of swims but all was not lost. After a long day of racing Ryan finished in fourth in his leaking boat in the mens division, and Claire and Marissa were tied in points and first places. Claire won the tie breaker having won the last race of the day puting her in first place in the woman's division and Marissa getting second and both qualifying for singlehand nationals. The sailors all a had a fun actionpacked day of sailing!

Fall Fury @ Wisconsin (September 9th & 10th)

Reed Weston (23) and crew Ally Hansen (23) along with Abe Weston (25) and crew Tina Dombrowski (23) took on the MCSA in the annual Fall Fury at Wisconsin. The beloved Honey Badgers also competed in the regatta, lead by Marissa Tegeder (25) with crew Sophie Lusty (24) and Mary Castellini (25) with crew Ellie Murphy (24). The first day began with little to no wind on the water, so a postponement was issued. Eventually there was a steady breeze of around 5 knots so the A fleet went out to sail. Shortly after, the wind had fallen back to 0. After playing the waiting game, the wind filled in from the North at a strong 10-11 knots. Racing began. With the fear of storms the next day, our PRO decided to do as many races as possible on that Saturday. As wind picked up and the waves grew in size, we did just that, getting 7 races in for each fleet. All Wisco sailors did very but a huge shout out to the Honey Badgers and Badgers of the B fleet for combined picket fencing the day. The next day was cold, rainy, and windy, and our PRO decided to cancel all races for the day. Wisco ended up with a clean sweep, taking both 1st and 2nd. A fun regatta with exciting sailing!
